Solcon Hosts 4 Day Seminar for Distributors and Partners

Solcon SeminarEarlier this month, Solcon hosted 20 distributors and business partners during a 4 day seminar held at Solcon's headquarters in Yoqneam, Israel.

During the seminar, Solcon introduced its innovative compact HRVS-DN product as well as its cutting edge new Low Voltage Soft Starter- the iStart. The objective of the seminar was to strengthen relationships with the partners and distributors and to share Solcon's commitment to long term product reliability and innovation.

The Seminar agenda included business sessions led by Solcon's executives, introducing new strategies and innovations that will be launched to the market in the very near future.

In addition, our partners and distributors had the chance to visit the Solcon R&D center in Yoqneam and have 'hands-on' factory experience with a wide range of Solcon products.

Jonathan Barrie, Solcon Area Manager, said: "The seminar was a great opportunity to expose our partners to our product portfolio, as well as to the growing importance of innovation at Solcon. It allowed us to better understand our customers' needs and provided a platform for networking and for new business opportunities".

During their stay, the participants had the chance to tour Israel and visit many of its beautiful sites and holy places.

Starting High Power Rated Motors in Marine Applications

RVS-DNPlatform Supply Vessels (PSV) are specially designed to supply goods and personnel to and from offshore oil platforms. Taking on such an important role, these vessels must be fully functional, at all times, thus reliability cannot be compromised.

Recently, Solcon delivered 40 Mega Low Voltage Soft Starters for 12 PSV's and 8 PCS (Port State Control) vessels. The RVS-DN Soft-Starters, 1800A, 480V were installed to start the vessel's bow thruster motors, rated at 1000kW.

"One of the biggest challenges in Marine Electrical applications is to start high power rated, Low and Medium Voltage motors at reduced starting currents. As Soft Starter Specialists, we perform starting simulations, and forecast with high accuracy, the minimum starting current that can be achieved with Solcon Soft Starters. In this project, we were able to start the bow thruster's motor at a current of under 2.5In, therefore enabling the use of a smaller generator set" said Izzi Eicher, VP Sales at Solcon.

Solcon is a world leader in manufacturing high rated Medium and Low Voltage Soft Starters.

Utilizing Thyristor Based Technology to Keep Pipes from Freezing

Thyristor Power ControlCCT Engineering is an engineering company that integrates heating solutions for pipes that are installed in extreme cold conditions. Areas of Russia endure extremely low environmental temperatures which demand taking special measures against the freezing of pipes. This was the case in Urengoi, Russia. CCT Engineering recently utilized Solcon's Thyristor Power Controller to control a 1 km heating element cable to prevent this problem.

CCT Engineering's challenge was to source a reliable power control system to control the temperature of the heating element, and in extreme environmental conditions (down to -36°C). Due to the high 'hot-to-cold' resistance ratio of this type of heating element, it was necessary to use Phase Angle control to minimize the associated inrush current. By using Phase Angle Control mode, the associated 'thermal shock' was eliminated, allowing for smooth, continuous power delivery.

Solcon's R&D team developed a customized TPS product that allowed for operation in the phase control mode for up to 60 minutes. After this period of time, the TPS switched to Zero Crossing control mode to control the output to the heaters without creating excess system harmonics that are typical in the Phase Control mode.

Solcon delivered to the customer ten TPS units rated 690 volts at 58 amps, for this unique application.
